Unlike like other high-octane contact sports, polo actually requires very little in the way of equipment for both horse and rider. Even with the speed involved, polo can be very safe to play – as the rules dictate as safe a playing environment as possible.
The players wear high leather boots, knee guards, and a helmet. Some helmets include a metal face guard for added protection and players can also opt for protective sports eyewear.
Aside from their regular tack (saddle & bridle), the ponies wear protective bandages and boots to shield them from the ball and/or the mallet.
